Velvet Knife

Music ·

Original music and lyrics by Gernot Ottowitz. Produced with the help of suno.ai

A seductive art-pop song about beauty, danger, and the thin line between wonder and surrender - an invitation to move closer, but not disappear inside what draws you in.

Velvet Knife started as an instrumental for a fashion campaign for a local designer. The collection was very much about the seductive and dangerous elements of nature.

The original instrumental already carried that contrast: beautiful harp glissandos, distant soprano choir elements, a deep pushing kick, military snare gestures, and harsh low strings cutting through the arrangement with an almost physical force. The song grew from that tension - something elegant and alluring on the surface, but sharp underneath. This track was the perfect opportunity to create something more “pop” than most of my other songs.

Lyrically, Velvet Knife is not a simple warning song. It does not say: stay away from danger, stay safe, avoid the pull. I don’t really believe life should be about avoiding everything risky or uncertain. That can become its own kind of trap. Some experiences are worth approaching precisely because they are intense, seductive, unfamiliar, or a little dangerous. They can open something, teach something, awaken something. But the song is also not naive about that. Beauty can have hunger. Attraction can consume. Wonder can become surrender if you lose your balance.

Temptation - I think - is not the witch in Snow White offering you an apple, it’s the door left open just a tiny bit. It does not ask you to surrender, but it opens the room. It lets you come closer. It gives you fragrance, shimmer, sweetness, bloom - while never hiding the knife. That duality became the center of the song: take the sweetness and the warning. Let them move in the same place.

Musically, I wanted the track to feel seductive and controlled, but with something dangerous constantly pressing through. The first 5 seconds already tell the story: beautiful humming morphs into a harsh low cello line, breathing out, then a dragging, rigid beat beat kicks in - as if there is resistance on your part to follow but you still can’t help but move ahead. The harp and choir elements create a kind of polished, almost ritual beauty, while the low strings, snare-like force, and deep pulse keep reminding you that this beauty is not harmless. High pitched solo strings blend in with an almost screamed vocal line. It moves like something you want to follow, but also something you should stay awake around.

For me, Velvet Knife is about learning to approach intensity with awareness instead of fear. It is about loving the danger without giving yourself away to it. Take the wonder. Keep your balance. Love the danger. Love your life.

Lyrics

Velvet Knife

[Verse 1]
I hold the light where you can see it
Gold and velvet, open still
There is fragrance in the silence
There is sweetness in the thrill

You come nearer for the shimmer
For the promise, for the bloom
I don't ask you to surrender
I just open up the room

[Pre-Chorus]
Come softly
Come aware
Not every gift
Is free or fair

[Chorus]
Beauty has a hidden hunger
Beauty wears a careful face
You can touch it
You can taste it
Just don't vanish in its grace

Every nectar has a shadow
Every flower knows the knife
Take the wonder
Keep your balance
Love the danger
Love your life

[Verse 2]
Some are fed by being needed
Some by trust and some by need
Some by color, some by perfume
Some by how the bright things bleed

I was made to draw you inward
You were made to pry
There is no lie in the attraction
Only wisdom in goodbye

[Pre-Chorus]
Come closer
If you choose
Some things enchant
And still consume

[Chorus]
Beauty has a hidden hunger
Beauty wears a careful face
You can touch it
You can taste it
Just don't lose yourself in grace

Every nectar has a shadow
Every flower knows the knife
Take the wonder
Keep your balance
Love the danger
Love your life

[Bridge]
Let the choir pull you under
Let the glitter catch your eye
Just remember what draws you in
Can be sharp when you lean by

[Final Chorus]
Beauty has a hidden hunger
Beauty wears a careful face
Take the sweetness
Take the warning
Let them move in the same place

Every nectar has a shadow
Every flower knows the knife
Take the wonder
Keep your balance
Love the danger
Love your life
