The Hollow came from the image of a place underneath fear, language, and restlessness. Not death. Not sleep. Something older and quieter than that. A dark, warm ground you can sink into for a moment when life gets too loud.
I wanted the song to feel held but not sentimental. Soft piano, hang drum patterns, deep pulses, wide strings, and a voice that stays close to the ear. More breathed than sung. For me it’s a song about letting go and being received by something larger, older, and calmer than whatever is chasing you on the surface.
Lyrics
The Hollow
[Verse 1]
Here in the hollow
Soft and low
Leave what is restless
Let it go
Under the quiet
Under the skin
There is a warm dark
Pulling you in
[Refrain]
Lay your weight down
Lay your fear down
Nothing is needed
Here
Rest in the dark
Rest in the deep
What has been searching
Need not speak
[Verse 2]
Deep in the silence
Breath after breath
Something is holding
All that is left
No need for naming
No need to know
Only the slow earth
Only the glow
[Bridge]
Fall without falling
Sink without sound
Nothing to carry
Nothing to hold
What you have been
Loosens its form
Into the hollow
Into the whole
[Refrain]
Lay your weight down
Lay your fear down
Nothing is needed
Here
Rest in the dark
Rest in the deep
What has been searching
Need not speak
[Outro]
Here in the hollow
Soft and low
Leave what is restless
Let it go
