Accelerate started with a simple refrain: “accelerate, speed it up, bring it back to me.” From there it kept slipping sideways in a way I loved. Tuba, music-box, and small brass gestures keep nudging the song off the obvious path, but it never loses its lightness.
For me it’s about sending something out and not trying to control what comes back. A word. A spark. A signal. Maybe just your own curiosity. That looseness is the whole point. It gave me room to let the song stay strange, playful, and a little off-center.
Lyrics
Accelerate (Bring it back to me)
[Verse 1]
I tossed a spark into the weather
Just to see what it would do
It hit the air, it hit the ceiling
Then it split itself in two
A little left, a little sideways
A little faster than it should
And suddenly the day was moving
Like I always hoped it would
[Refrain]
Accelerate
speed it up
Bring it back to me
Accelerate and
Bring it back to me
[Verse 2]
I wound the morning like a music box
And let it skip a tooth
The bells came out in funny angles
But they still rang true
I dropped a word into the current
Watched it wobble, watched it spin
It came back laughing through the window
With a brass band folded in
[Refrain]
Accelerate
Speed it up
Bring it back to me
Accelerate and
Bring it back to me
[Bridge]
Not for keeps
Not for proof
Just to feel the circuit move
Send it wide
Set it free
Bring back more than I could see
[Final Refrain]
Accelerate
Speed it up
Bring it back to me
Accelerate and
Bring it back to me
[Outro]
A little left
A little strange
Let it travel
Let it change
